The fully-equipped MoonWalk® MoonVan fleet can be driven to customer sites, enabling decision-makers to evaluate the features and benefits of this advanced technology
PPG is taking its revolutionary automated paint mixing technology on the road with the launch of its innovative MoonWalk® MoonVan fleet. The fully-equipped vans can be driven to customer sites, enabling decision-makers to evaluate the features and benefits of this advanced technology—with the convenience of not having to leave their place of business.
“A painter’s time is valuable, and we respect that it’s not easy taking time away from their collision repair work,” explains Ryan Woolfenden, PPG digital services manager, U.S. and Canada. “So, given the high interest from our customers wanting to learn more about this technology, we created the MoonVan to bring it directly to their doorstep.”
The PPG MoonWalk® mixing system was designed specifically to take the industry-leading Envirobase® High Performance refinish system to the next level of color matching accuracy and performance efficiency. It automatically dispenses the exact amount of each toner—at an accuracy ten times more precise than the conventional process. And to further eliminate waste, the system is designed to ensure all of the toner is used, down to the last drop.
In addition to its onboard MoonWalk® automated mixing system, each MoonVan is fully equipped with PPG LINQ™ digital color tools, including PPG MagicBox™ and a Class 1 Division 2 iPad solution. This enables paint technicians to demo a real-world color match on-site—from taking a vehicle color reading through to the final paint mix.
With nearly 2,000 users worldwide since its launch in 2019, the PPG MoonWalk® system has been setting a new standard in paint mixing processes and receiving recognition from the refinish industry, winning awards for its innovation and sustainability.
“One of the most obvious differences is that it mixes to the hundredth—not to the tenth—so it’s much more accurate with the color match,” explains Frank McClosky, owner, Frank’s Collision Repair, Baytown, Texas. “When the painter has full confidence knowing that the color is going to match the first time, there’s no need to mix extra paint that you might need to tint.”
“This is a great advantage for us,” explains Carl Garcia, owner of Carl’s Collision Center, Fall River, Massachusetts. “It’s 100% accurate. No waste. And it has increased our efficiency by at least 15%.”
Going all in with digital tools
The MoonWalk® mixing system is just one innovation of PPG’s recent efforts to advance color-matching performance beyond paint. The PPG LINQ™ ecosystem helps painters improve their repair processes using a cloud-based platform and interconnected digital hardware, software, and innovative services.
The innovations provided by the PPG LINQ™ ecosystem are:
- PPG DigiMatch™ spectrophotometer, a compact, advanced multi-angle color camera for taking accurate readings of an actual vehicle color
- PPGVisualizID™ software, a digital color visualization tool that works with the PPG DigiMatch™ spectrophotometer to enable the technician to compare 3D “virtual sprayout” renderings to determine the best color variant formula
- PPG LINQ™ Colorcloud-based digital software for easily identifying the best color from PPG’s extensive formula database
- PPG MagicBox™ wireless device connects with PPG LINQ™ Color software and sends jobs to the scale, enabling the technician to complete the mix quickly without the need for a separate PC
The Envirobase® High Performance paint system is compatible with every tool in the PPG LINQ™ digital ecosystem, making it the perfect solution for modern collision centers.
