A2C2 extends a commendation to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and the newly expanded Michigan Auto Fraud Task Force
Editor’s Note: The Automotive Anti-Counterfeiting Council (A2C2) is issuing this statement in response to the article, “Man charged for selling counterfeit car parts following task force investigation.”
To the Editor,
A2C2 believes this case brings to light the significant public safety hazards associated with counterfeit automotive parts, especially safety restraint systems such as airbags. Within the last two years, an estimated 81,000 vehicles in Michigan have been repaired following an airbag deployment.
Each of those vehicles represents an opportunity for a counterfeit airbag to be installed during the repair and replacement process. Furthermore, the statistic mentioned and our own members’ testing indicate that counterfeit airbags will fail to deploy correctly, which highlights a life-threatening risk.
A2C2 extends a commendation to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and the newly expanded Michigan Auto Fraud Task Force for their prompt intervention in addressing this matter and for ensuring accountability for those selling counterfeit automotive parts.
Our collaboration with the Michigan State Police Metro Detroit Auto-Theft Recovery Team represents a critical stride in the fight against counterfeit auto parts, auto theft, and fraudulent activities.
It is paramount that these offenses are prosecuted to the fullest degree under the law to safeguard all drivers and occupants.
Best regards,
Automotive Anti-Counterfeiting Council (A2C2)
