Midwest Auto Care Alliance reaches out with ‘urgent legislative update’

Missouri’s vehicle safety inspection requirement is on the brink of being eliminated and the industry is urged to immediately contact their legislators

Gladstone, Mo.—The Midwest Auto Care Alliance (MWACA) is reaching out with an “urgent legislative update” that directly impacts both the industry and the safety of Missouri drivers.

A transportation bill currently moving through the Missouri legislature, SB 1408, includes language that would eliminate Missouri’s vehicle safety inspection requirement. This bill has now passed both chambers in different forms and is now in the final negotiation stage, where key decisions will be made quickly.

MWACA Lobbyist Ron Reiling told Aftermarket Matters Weekly last night, “Both parties agreed to conference committee and assigned participants: five reps and five senators. The conference committee could convene as early as tomorrow. Session ends next Friday, May 15.

“If the conference committee comes to an agreement it will need to go back to each body for approval before being sent to the governor. If they do not agree the bill would die.”

Why This Matters

MWACA stated, “Every day, our members identify critical issues such as brake failures, worn or unsafe tires, and steering and suspension problems. Without inspections, many unsafe vehicles will remain on the road — putting Missouri families at risk.”

The association added, “The bill is in its final stage, and decisions could happen quickly. This is likely our last opportunity to influence the outcome.”

Act Now

MWACA is asking the repair community to take 5–10 minutes today to contact key legislators who are on the Transportation Committee with the following message:

“I’m a local business owner and constituent. I strongly oppose eliminating Missouri’s vehicle safety inspections. These inspections protect drivers and ensure unsafe vehicles are not on the road. Please oppose any effort to repeal this requirement.”

The legislators and phone numbers are as follows:

  • Doug Beck — 573-751-0220

  • Justin Brown — 573-751-5713

  • Travis Fitzwater (Transportation Committee Chair) — 573-751-2757

  • Adam Schnelting — 573-751-1141

  • Nick Schroer — 573-751-1282

  • Barbara Washington — 573-751-3158
