Get Certified: ASE school bus tests

While several of these tests parallel the ASE medium-heavy truck and transit bus tests, each test is designed to test knowledge of systems specific to school buses

Leesburg, Va.—The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) reminds service and repair professionals to maintain or advance their ASE school bus certifications.

ASE initiated this test series at the request of the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT) to identify and recognize those school bus technicians who possess the knowledge and skills necessary to diagnose, service and repair different subsystems of type A, B, C and D school buses.

While several of these tests parallel the ASE medium-heavy truck and transit bus tests, each test is designed to test knowledge of systems specific to school buses.

The school bus certification tests offered include:

S1 – Body systems and special equipment
S2 – Diesel engines
S3 – Drive train
S4 – Brakes
S5 – Suspension and steering
S6 – Electrical/electronic systems
S7 – Air conditioning systems and controls

Those automotive service professionals who are certified in tests S1 – S6 are recognized as ASE-Certified Master School Bus Technicians. The S7 test is not arequirement for Master School Bus Technician status.

Technicians must retest every five years to retain their certification. The school bus recertification tests (S1R – S7R) are about half as long as the initial certification tests.
