Husband-and-wife shop owners will retire after acquisition

Gerber Collision & Glass acquires Hayes Body Shop in Illinois after 36 years in operation serving Sycamore and DeKalb markets

Sycamore, Ill.—The Boyd Group Inc. has announced the acquisition of a collision repair center in Sycamore, Ill.

The family-owned repair center of husband-and-wife team Randy and Christy Hayes has operated as Hayes Body Shop for 36 years and is located just off Route 23, which is the main roadway between Sycamore and DeKalb, home of Northern Illinois University.

According to Hayes’ website, Randy Hayes was a former technician, and founded the business in 1986. “I didn’t want any shortcuts,” Hayes said, as he reflected back on those early days. “There’s a right way and a wrong way to approach running a body shop and my standards and ethics won’t allow anything but doing things right the first time.”

The Hayes’ stated on their shop’s Facebook page that the business transitioned to Gerber Collision on Oct. 22. “We are ready to retire Hayes Body Shop, Inc. and look forward to some traveling, spending more time with family and friends, working in the yard and getting involved in community volunteering activities,” they stated in a post. “When we look back at the beginnings in a garage at our farm house in Kirkland, to a location in downtown DeKalb, and in 2000 to the present facility behind Hy-Vee, we had no idea how blessed we would be.

“We have entrusted Gerber Collision to continue that same excellent service we strived to provide. Our business would not be what it is without the staff and skilled technicians who worked with us.”

Their shop staff will remain with Gerber.

“The acquisition of this location and well-established team strengthens our brand connecting the Chicago suburbs and Rockford regions,” said Kevin Burnett, COO of Gerber Collision & Glass.
