Washington lawmaker files bill to target catalytic converter thefts

Bill would prohibit scrap dealers from purchasing catalytic converters except from commercial enterprises and vehicle owners

Olympia, Wash.—A bill filed by Sen. Jeff Wilson that targets catalytic converter thefts will be considered during the 2022 legislative session as thefts continue to grow in the state. It would prohibit scrap dealers from purchasing catalytic converters except from commercial enterprises and vehicle owners.

If the bill is approved, scrap dealers would also be required to confirm vehicle ownership upon resale and maintain a record of vehicle identification numbers (VIN), according to a report by King-TV, noting that cash payments must be delayed by at least five days.

The proposed legislation is similar to an Oregon law taking effect in January.
